After completing this module, students should be able to

  • identify learners’ needs at the beginning of the Senior/FET Phase and develop language skills in the FAL at the commencement of the phase;
  • distinguish between a variety of different theories focused on effective teaching of an additional language;
  • formulate an opinion regarding the teaching of English as a first additional language and evaluate approaches to teaching English as a FAL;
  • understand elements of a balanced approach to teaching an additional language; and
  • understand the diverse context of the South African classroom and be empathetic to the circumstances of the learners in their classroom.
