After completing this module, students should be able to

  • analyse set forms of literature using recognisable, formulated techniques and practices;
  • critically evaluate and judge set forms of literature based on formulated techniques and practices;
  • incorporate the above analysis skills in their own teaching in the Intermediate Phase as the situation demands;
  • be equipped to exhibit appreciation for English literature by independently writing a literary essay;
  • recognise the necessity of literature and its application in the Intermediate Phase in developing the four skills dictated by the CAPS document;
  • deduce and compare the vast differences between various literature texts (prose, poetry, drama, and film) that the different grades within the Intermediate Phase deal with;
  • use knowledge of child development between grades four to six with a specific focus on identifying the educational needs of the learners at the beginning of the Intermediate Phase by incorporating different social and cultural contexts of the learners as found in literary texts; and
  • identify and differentiate between methods of integrating the teaching of literature naturally and enjoyably to cater for various learners and circumstances.
