After completing this module, students should be able to

  • recognise and discuss the diverse context of the South African classroom, with specific focus on language teaching through applying knowledge of child development by identifying the needs of the learners at the beginning of the Intermediate Phase;
  • categorise and contrast a variety of different theories focused on effective teaching of an additional language;
  • stimulate and employ the development of language skills in the first additional language at the commencement of the phase;
  • recognise and discover the various roles of the English FAL educator, paying particular attention to the essence of good administration as well as effective time management; and
  • compare and evaluate the differences in lesson plans used in the various Intermediate Phase grades.
