After completing this module, students should be able to

  • apply knowledge of child development between grade 3 and 4 to the identification of learners’ needs at the beginning of the Intermediate Phase;
  • stimulate and employ the development of language skills in the first additional language at the commencement of the phase;
  • categorise, distinguish between, and contrast a variety of different theories focused on the effective teaching of an additional language;
  • formulate or hypothesise an opinion regarding teaching English as a first additional language as well as evaluate approaches to teaching English as a FAL;
  • understand and explain the diverse context of the South African classroom, with a specific focus on language teaching; and
  • analyse and supply elements of a balanced approach to teaching an additional language because they will have to promote and enable learners to master Listening and Speaking as a language skill.
