After completing this module, students should be able to
- identify learners’ needs at the beginning of Further Education and Training tuition and the development of language skills in the FAL at the beginning of the phase;
- distinguish between a variety of different theories focused on the efficient tuition of an additional language;
- formulate a viewpoint regarding the tuition of English as FAL and evaluate approaches regarding the tuition of English FAL;
- understand elements of a balanced approach towards the tuition of an additional language; and
- understand the diverse context of the South African classroom and be empathic regarding the circumstances of the learners in the classroom.
