Ná die voltooiing van hierdie module sal studente

  • die interne struktuur van die Aarde en die geologiese prosesse – verwering, erosie, plaattektoniek en die rotssiklus – wat die Aarde se oppervlak oor tyd gevorm het, kan verduidelik en fossiele en rotstipes as rekords van geologiese geskiedenis kan interpreteer;
  • minerale en gesteentes volgens hul eienskappe kan klassifiseer en mynbou van minerale hulpbronne in Suid-Afrika – insluitende ekonomiese waarde, omgewingsimpak en rehabilitasie – kan verduidelik;
  • die lae van die Aarde se atmosfeer kan beskryf en die kweekhuiseffek as ’n natuurlike en menslik versterkte proses kan verduidelik;
  • die Son-Aarde-Maanverhouding en die verskynsels – dag en nag, seisoene, getye en verduisterings – wat hieruit voortvloei, kan verduidelik;
  • die samestelling van die sonnestelsel en die groter heelal op inleidende vlak, insluitende stervorming, die oerknalteorie, ruimteverkenning en die bydrae van inheemse kennis tot astronomie – kan beskryf; en
  • vanuit ’n reformatoriese perspektief kan motiveer dat die Aarde en die heelal God se skepping is en rentmeesterskap oor die planeet in mondelinge en skriftelike assessering toon.

After completing this module, students should be able to:

  • explain the internal structure of the Earth and the geological processes – weathering, erosion, plate tectonics and the rock cycle – that have shaped the Earth's surface over time and interpret fossils and rock types as records of geological history;
  • classify minerals and rocks according to their properties and explain the mining of mineral resources in South Africa, including their economic value, environmental impact and rehabilitation;
  • describe the layers of the Earth's atmosphere and explain the greenhouse effect as both a natural process and one that has been intensified by human activity;
  • explain the Sun–Earth–Moon relationship and the phenomena that result from it, namely day and night, seasons, tides and eclipses;
  • describe, at an introductory level, the composition of the solar system and the wider universe, including star formation, the big bang theory, space exploration and the contribution of indigenous knowledge to astronomy; and
  • motivate, from a reformational perspective, that the Earth and the universe are God's creation and demonstrate stewardship of the planet in oral and written assessments.
